Papal Conclave 2025: Latest Updates

Status:
The 2025 papal conclave to elect a new pope began today, May 7, in the Sistine Chapel following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. All 133 cardinal electors from 70 countries have entered the chapel, surrendered their devices, taken an oath of secrecy, and the doors have been locked. Voting is now underway.

How the Conclave Works:

  • Cardinals vote in secret until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority.
  • Balloting continues over several rounds, with black smoke indicating no decision and white smoke signaling a new pope has been chosen.
  • If no pope is elected after three days, voting pauses for reflection before resuming.

Frontrunners for Pope:

  • Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy)
  • Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines)
  • Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana)
  • Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (Italy)
Other possible compromise candidates include Cardinal Peter Erdo (Hungary) and Cardinal Mario Grech (Malta).

Live Coverage:
You can watch live coverage of the conclave and ceremonies on major news outlets and Vatican media.

No New Pope Yet:
As of now, no new pope has been elected. Watch for white smoke and the ringing of St. Peter’s Basilica bells for the official announcement
